Ingredients:
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder (unsweetened)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk (around 110°F)
- 1/4 cup melted butter (or vegetable oil)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup dark or milk chocolate chunks (or chocolate chips)
- 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing)
Instructions:
Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Mix and Knead:
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until the dough comes together. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour; if it’s too dry, add a small amount of milk.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Buns:
- Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
- Flatten each portion into a small disc and place a few chocolate chunks in the center. Fold the dough over the chocolate and pinch the edges to seal.
- Roll each filled dough portion into a smooth ball.
Second Rise:
- Place the buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between them to rise. Cover and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, until slightly puffed.
Bake:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly brush the tops of the buns with milk.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the buns are firm to the touch and lightly browned on top.
Cool and Serve:
Allow the chocolate buns to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with gooey melted chocolate inside.
Tips:
- For an extra indulgent touch, dust the buns with powdered sugar or drizzle with chocolate glaze.
- You can use milk, dark, or even white chocolate for the filling based on your preference.
- These buns taste best when served warm, but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
